Sunday

The phonecall with my mother was effectively over and I was going to hang up when she stopped me to tell me about all the people she knew who died this week. She listed a number of old women that I did not know, and said “The older I get the more people I know who die…”

“It’s a weird line to tow,” I said. “Would you rather… die before everyone so you don’t  have to see anyone die? Or… OUTLIVE EVERYONE.”

“Hahaha, yeah, do you either want to… get really old and poop in your pants in the nursing home? Or just drop dead suddenly.”

“Yeah, I would much rather die suddenly and without realizing it, than like… get stuck somewhere for half a day in a lot of pain… and then die.”

“Well, half a day would be better than three years with cancer.”

“Yeah,” I said. “………..yeah……….”

There was a silence a while. And then I said:

“Well, on that note…”
